Going Deep: Activities to Promote Depth of Knowledge

As educators, we want our students to do more than simply memorize facts and figures. We want them to engage with the material on a deeper level, developing critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of the subject matter. To promote this deeper level of engagement, we can use activities that promote Depth of Knowledge (DOK). In this blog post, we will explore five activities that can be used to promote DOK in the classroom.

  1. Real-world connections: Connect subject material to real-world situations and experiences to help students see the relevance and importance of the material.

  2. Analysis and evaluation: Encourage students to analyze and evaluate information by asking open-ended questions and providing opportunities for debate and discussion.

  3. Synthesis: Challenge students to synthesize information from multiple sources to form a new idea or perspective.

  4. Problem-solving: Engage students in problem-solving activities that require critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  5. Research projects: Assign research projects that require students to find, evaluate, and synthesize information to develop a deeper understanding of the subject material.

By incorporating these activities into your teaching, you can promote Depth of Knowledge and help your students engage with subject material in a deeper, more meaningful way. From making real-world connections to engaging in problem-solving and research projects, there are many ways to promote DOK in the classroom.
